Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 available for preorder on TheMobileStore.com, availability stated for 12th January in India

The excitement for Lumia 920 and 820 here in India is unparalleled. Everybody is eagerly awaiting for the launch of Lumia WP8 devices in India. False. Nobody is because 80% of the crowd is tired of waiting for these devices and have opted for something else. So for those of you (including me) who are still waiting for the launch, we had a breather for you last time around and from the buzz created around the post, I may be wrong on the 20% but not too far away from it. TheMobileStore.com today updated their website with details of Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 pre order. Lumia 920 is available for pre order for Rs 40,000 while Lumia 820 is up for pre order for 30,000 Rupees. The important point here is they do not know the exact price but whatever the final price is – it’s  below the pre order price (According to them, 35-40k for 920 and 25-30k for 820) so you will get a refund before delivery. Both 920 and 820 are stated to be available on 12th January and expected to be delivered in 5-7 days. Both the devices are up on pre order in 4 colors.

To be really honest with you, I don’t see the point of pre ordering – there’s no incentive to pre order. But for those of you who really want to, we have provided the links below:

What does it say about the actual pricing of both of the devices – I’d say not much but I think we have a good range in which you can fit in both the devices and quite frankly, it was expected. What disturbs me is the pricing for Lumia 820, if it’s on the upper bound of given range then I am more than certain that it’s going to be a Lumia 800 scenario all over again. It won’t work. What Nokia needs is to price it under 25k and price Lumia 920 under 35k – only then they have a chance to grab the majority of the high end crowd which is already a small subset but profit margins are pretty good in this subset which is why company may plan to take another chance.

The pricing and availability details from Nokia will be up really soon so stay tuned here for official updates.

Lumia 820 and Lumia 920

Launch and pricing details for Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and 620 in India

Yes, it’s been a long wait but according to our sources – your wait is going to be over very soon. According to our source, Nokia has finally has a concrete launch date for both Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 launch in India. Nokia India is planning to launch Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 on 14th January next year and it will be available in 9 Major cities (including Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore)  initially. Why 14th January? On this day next year, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated all across India. On Makar Sankranti, thousands of people all across India enjoy flying colorful kites and what better to complement these kites than color new Nokia Lumias (hint hint: potential marketing campaign material)!

On the pricing front, Lumia 920 is said to be priced Rupees 33k, which is a very well balanced and competitive price point. We do not have a price on Lumia 820 yet unfortunately. I am sure that’s a bummer but on the bright side, our source mentioned the Lumia 620 availability to us as well. Lumia 620 is expected to launch by the end of January and will cost you 12-13k which will be a game changer if Nokia goes ahead with it, but it’s too early to call.

That’s all we have for now. This is the holiday season and we hope this news is genuinely useful to folks who have been waiting for a Lumia WP8 for over two months now (including myself).

I have some thoughts on the whole WP8 launch fiasco , but I think I’ll save that for later (just in case you are interested, here’s HTC Windows Phone 8 launch story) . So folks in India, there’s more than one reason to look forward to Makar sankranti next year.

HTC Windows Phone 8

HTC 8X finally available on Flipkart, 8S nowhere to be found – HTC India’s disastrous WP8 launch

Windows Phone 8 launch in India has been, to be honest,  a disaster. Let’s do a recap: HTC announced Windows Phone 8 devices HTC 8X and 8S for Indian market with pricing  in November and followed up with availability info stating that devices will be available in “Early November“. Early November is long gone and HTC has done a horrible job with the launch of these devices. Before we dive into some of HTC’s mistakes, let’s talk about availability.

HTC 8X is available on Flipkart now, after weeks of “Pre order” -> Coming Soon -> Out of Stock fluctuations, for Rs 35,042 with delivery in 6-8 days. 8X is only in stock in black color and other colors (specifically blue) wont be in stock till 3rd week of December. Personally, if I  were planning on grabbing a 8X – I’d wait for a slightly more colorful 8X.

Saholic is also stocking black HTC 8X for 34,149 Rs and it’s the cheapest option available.

What’s the scene with offline stores? It’s a mess. HTC 8X is extremely hard to find. Some retailers are stocking 8X but do not have a working demo model for consumers. Even some of the HTC retail stores aren’t stocking 8X so you can imagine the scale of their disastrous launch. To top it all, their social media account disappeared for 20 odd days – so in this interval, every single query went unanswered. If there was a way to make their launch any worse, I think we could go back to 2011 when they silently launched HD7 and Mozart and I had to search tons of stores to find one device hidden in a cupboard. It’s pathetic. HTC is an email from HTC support could have fixed this but they prefer to be absolutely ignorant of this situation. making a fool out of itself and it’s consumers. We are stuck with HTC 8X in black (which doesn’t do justice to 8X) and 8S is absolutely nowhere to be found and there is no word on when it will be made available. A single tweet, Facebook post or even a mail from HTC support team could fix this mess but they prefer to remain absolutely silent on this. I wouldn’t call it silence, I’d call it pure ignorance.

This couldn’t get worse for Windows Phone 8 as a platform. Just one WP8 device in market, which itself is hard to find, another announced but is NOT available anywhere after one month of supposed release date and most importantly, no Lumia WP8 in the market. HTC India is repeating the same mistake, they have great devices but they have NO marketing strategy in place. This is exactly what killed HD7 and Mozart in India and I have written about my HTC Mozart initial experience in brief  here.

I know it’s a bit aggressive but from what I have seen in the past month and from incredibly frustrated existing HTC consumers: HTC has poor support service, close to nonexistent social media presence and bare minimum interactivity, clueless PR folks and most importantly no marketing strategy for any WP8 device – so let me filter my entire rant in one line – Do not purchase HTC Windows Phone  8 devices until and unless HTC India clears up what the heck is going on – where are the devices? What’s causing the delay? We need answers. Better yet, let’s just not give our hard earned money to HTC, sounds fair, right?

This is bad for Windows Phone 8 in a country where Samsung has completely dominated the market. Microsoft should step up and guide HTC India and most importantly, Nokia should get their Lumia WP8 out in market. Lumia WP8 devices missed Diwali season and are probably going to miss out Christmas – New Year as well from the looks of it. As a Windows Phone 8 potential customer, I am disappointed to see such poor show from OEMs.

HTC Windows Phone 8

HTC announces pricing for 8X and 8S in India: priced sensibly at Rs 35,000 and Rs 19,260 respectively

This week, HTC announced 8X and 8S for Indian market and stated their availability couple of days back as early November, in fact they teased a “coming next week” post for their Winter Collection and from their post today on Facebook 8X (along with HTC One X+ ) are the Winter Collection devices so we can see them available in market as early as next week. HTC India however surprised us with pricing today. Not only did they surprise us with the time of pricing but also the way they have priced the devices. HTC was the first company in India to bring out Windows Phone 7 devices, it was initially sent to all Microsoft India employees, and some unlucky ones (like yours truly) had to pay for HTC Mozart (mostly because HD7 the only other phone was too big). They priced the phone at utmost ridiculous pricing and this trend was followed by Nokia which I firmly believe is one of the reason why Windows Phone 7 didn’t do so well in India. Enough blabbering, back to the point.

HTC India has announced 8X for Rupees 35,023 and 8S for Rs 19,260. Both the phones are aptly priced in my opinion however I would like to point out that 8S pricing by HTC is going to be an incredible sales booster. This is very aggressive and that is how exactly they should have been from the very beginning. The phones will be up for purchase next week.

Do you think now Nokia will price 820 at similar pricing as 8S and give it a competition or price it at a slightly premium 25k and price 920 at 40k and face similar fate as Windows Phone 7? We’ll find out really soon!

Lumia 510 now available in India via Flipkart for Rs 9,999

Lumia 510 was announced in India last week as a Diwali gift from Nokia to India. Lumia 510 is Lumia 610′s taller but younger brother. 510 has a 4 inch display and 4 GB memory (plus 7 GB free on skydrive) and that’s the only thing which separates it from Lumia 610.  Last week, Nokia stated that 510 will be priced below 11,000 Rupees and I wanted them to price it below 10,000 and lo and behold – Flipkart is now listing Lumia 510 for immediate purchase at 9,999 Rupees.

I recently received Lumia 610 review unit from Nokia. At first, I wasn’t too sure if the processor could handle it but I can tell you it’s been mostly a lag free experience but not as smooth as I’d like. Some applications also refuse to work but that’s a small number (yet some are important apps) that you’d be missing out on so do make sure that you keep this in mind when you purchase 510 as they have the same processor. For the first time, Nokia India has priced a Lumia device right and not only that, they have launched it right before Diwali and this could be a huge boost in sales for them. Also, with Lumia WP7 filled with Diwali offers and price cuts  and most importantly, with Lumia WP8 family arriving this month – this is Nokia’s most important month in a long long time.

Complete Diff of the Assemblies and Types between Windows Phone SDK for 7.1 and 8.0

image

First Floor Software have published a complete diff of all the assemblies and types between the Framework that comes with the old Windows Phone SDK and the new Windows Phone SDK.

The largest chunk of assemblies removed from 8.0 seems to be in the absence of the XNA framework, and certain Xbox-Live gamer services. There are many many assemblies added to 8.0, essentially making it a much more complete .NET framework. This is probably a by-product of the NT kernel in Windows Phone 8, which allowed them to port over a larger chunk of the desktop .NET. Hopefully this means more compatibility with many .NET code snippets and controls out there!

Check the entire diff for rundown.

Nokia India makes the right decision ~ 30% price cut on Lumia 800 plus free Nokia purity headsets by Monster

I believe my ranting paid off. Dhruv from FoneArena discovered a Saholic listing price cut of Lumia 800 and he has been able to confirm that this indeed is an official price cut and you will soon see this reflect at both online and offline stores. Lumia 800 on Saholic has been priced at 18867 Rupees and not only that but you also get a free Nokia purity headset by Monster, worth Rs. 5110 which makes it a really sweet deal. The other devices in the Lumia family didn’t get any price cut unfortunately (they are appropriately priced as well, I’d say – atleast at offline stores). Now with the launch of Lumia 510 and it’s supposed under 11k price tag – Lumia family looks bold and now – affordable. Listing below:

We posted about Nokia’s Diwali plan last week where they offered free accessory with Nokia Lumia device and I argued about how the lack of price cut will affect sales at the most crucial period of mobile phone sale at this point of time, which would be Diwali.  It looks like sense has prevailed (or we are seeing some pressure from retailers ) and the right thing has been done. Hopefully market will appreciate the price cut and Lumia sales see some boom. Personally, I’d predict 510 and 610 to lead the chart this Diwali. Oh, you guys remember Lumia 900 sitting pretty at a ridiculous price tag? No? Me neither.

Nokia announces Lumia 510 for India, launching next month – to be priced under 11k Rupees!

Press folks and bloggers were invited to a “Nokia’s gift for Diwali” event today and we were pretty sure that it’s going to be Lumia 510 launch. And indeed today, Nokia India just unveiled Lumia 510 for the Indian market. The specs are as follows: 4inch display (WVGA) , 4 GB memory, 256 MB RAM, 5 MP Camera and a 800 MHz processor. Lumia 510 also comes with free 3 month pass to unlimited Nokia Music and Mix radio streaming. What’s worth noting is that there is still no concrete selling price information yet but < 11k is what the press has been told. Lumia 510 will come in 5 colors. 510 owners will also get access to 7 GB of free Skydrive space.

Lumia 610 owners, I don’t know if I should call this an upgrade or a cheaper brother of 610 but you must note that 510 has a larger display (4″ v/s 3.7″) but less memory (4GB v/s 8GB on 610).

Here’s the official video from Nokia:

Here’s a couple of pictures from UnleashThePhones and BGRIndia right from the launch event:

So Lumia 510 is Nokia’s Diwali gift to India. A couple of posts back I ranted about how Nokia is missing out on huge opportunity by not getting WP8 devices ready for Diwali (I stick with my stance) and in the process cutting prices for WP 7.x devices. Lumia 510 can actually sell really well on Diwali which is next month. Nokia is planning to release the device under 11k Rupees (as told to the press today) but I am thinking if they go to <10k or even better <9k – Windows Phone can really see a turnaround in sales in India. This is what was required on Day one when Nokia launched 800 and 710 in India. It’s a little funny and sad at the same time that such an important an import device is coming out when Windows Phone 8 launch is on the horizon.

Nokia needs to drag Samsung out of the Under 10k market that Nokia once ruled – this is a step in the right direction but we need more variants of 510 to actually make a dent in the market. If Nokia can get a WP8 to be this dirt cheap – I think we may have a chance to see Windows Phone go mainstream in India.

WPSauce impact? Nokia officially teases Nokia Lumia 510 launch in India on Facebook

I feel like a CNN IBN investigative reporter telling you about how our news made impact on x and that prompted x to do y. Yesterday, we confirmed that Lumia 510 was in India and definitely close to being in the hands of consumers as well. Today, Nokia India posted the following status on it’s Facebook page

lumia510nokiaindia

lumia510nokiaindia

The device should cost you less than 10,000 Rs so it’s going to be THE most important Lumia device for Nokia India considering how Samsung is completely dominating the low – mid segment, once owned by Nokia, in the Indian market and there is no way Nokia can survive without getting the sales numbers they had couple of years ago.

There’s a press conference to be held in Delhi by Nokia regarding a device launch on 23rd this month so this could very well be the launch of Lumia 510 in India. However, from what we know – the devices won’t be available this month. We’ll keep you updated on this.
