Microsoft confirms – no Windows Phone 8 Apollo for existing Windows Phone devices, Windows Phone 7.8 update to be issued instead

Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8 Apollo today. You can read more details here. However, the question that most Windows Phone users have been asking for a while is: Will my Windows Phone update to Apollo? The answer, technically, is no. However, don’t be disappointed. Paul thurrot reports that for existing Windows Phone users – a filtered down version of Apollo will be available. Some features like the new start screen will be included in v7.8 however it won’t be same as Windows Phone 8.0 Apollo update.

So how will this update reach users? Paul thurrot says that Microsoft will bypass the carriers and deliver this update straight to end users. Quick update for you Windows Phone users. It is a bit disappointing but well quite expected.
