Dell Venue Pro follows the current trend – goes through a massive price drop in India, now available for Rupees 15,490

This is the trend I am willing to support. First Samsung Omnia W, desperately followed by Nokia Lumia 710 and then more recently Lumia 800 – have all undergone massive price drops here in India. Dell Venue pro, received a price cut at the beginning of the year and was selling for nearly 20,000 Rupees and now according to Flipkart: Dell Venue Pro is now available for 15,490 Rupees. Dell has had a pretty bad Windows Phone OEM image if you ask me, first they didn’t bother to stock the devices in time and then riddled the existing buyers by not providing them with necessary firmware in time. Our editor has written about one of the issues here. Hit the source link below for the flipkart product page.

My 2 cents regarding DVP: It’s an excellent phone – great build quality and most importantly, it has a slide out vertical physical keyboard. Yes, it’s the only and only Windows Phone device in India with a physical keyboard. It also has a 4.1 inch screen with 16 GB of memory. DVP has everything that you’d find in 1st generation Windows Phone devices and most importantly, you can unlock it too.

In spite of its troubles, the Dell Venue Pro is probably the best 1st gen Windows Phone and holds its own among the 2nd gen handsets too. Its certainly the prettiest (save for the Lumia 800 and 900) and the keyboard works like a dream. The Super AMOLED display is outstanding too. Dell has been much maligned for inadequate software support, but to cut them some slack, I received all Microsoft updates (NoDo, Mango, Vanishing Keyboard Fix etc) within a week of release on my unlocked device in India. Even the Firmware update from Dell reached me as soon as it was on offer. So, I think AT&T is more of a culprit in USA than Dell.

My major issue with DVP is the lack of compass driver by Dell, even though a compass exists in the handset. Not only is it baffling, but it also heavily restricts navigation, augmented reality and SkyMap kind of apps. Secondly, its 5 MP camera is far far below par in low light conditions. These days, its not possible to lug your DSLR at all times and the inadequate camera in my phone proves to be very frustrating. The camera and compass are the only two reasons I’m waiting for some suitable handset to be launched in India. My fellow editor on WP Sauce, Malcolm Williams would have me believe that HTC Titan II is the perfect device, but I have no hope of it being launched in India. So it looks like Lumia 900 for me. :-)

Too heavy, and the camera is garbage. Okay phone.
